Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas: Student movement and autonomy 1967-1976

Abstract

The article analyzes the student movements at the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT). In 1967, the first pro-autonomy university movement arose at the Universidad de Tamaulipas (UT), and achieved a university reform by modifying the Constitutive Law and the Organic Law, to move towards the UAT. Post 68 the second student movement emerged (1972), which achieved another university reform and greater autonomy with the issuance of the Organic Statute, which gave self-legislation, greater student and teacher representation in the University Assembly and in the technical councils of the faculties, and replaced the Governing Board with the Permanent Board. The third movement occurred between 1973 and 1974 when the University went through an internal and student division. In 1976 yet another movement arose, and for the rest of the decade and into the early 1980s the protests continued. This work is outlined from the perspective of social movements.
