Abstract

What was it really like in the past? In the long trajectory of historical writing, the idea that the goal of historians is to provide a window on the ways of life of another time is relatively new. Only in the last four decades have historians sought to reconstruct the lives of ordinary people in the past; and more recently they have also explored their thoughts, fears, memories, and even their physical sensations or innermost feelings. The challenge as ever for historians has been one of available sources and in recent years historians of education have made inventive uses of oral histories, images, material culture, and anthropological techniques. They have additionally pushed the issue of sources beyond common historical practice to examine the fields of knowledge production and consumption, the uncertainties of memory, and psychological studies. This article will explore how historians of education can delve into the spaces, senses and emotions of schooling.
